Their 1939 marriage joined two of the era's most glamorous stars. At the time, the beautiful, blond Lombard was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood and the star of several sophisticated comedies; Gable had just completed his role as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind. They lived happily on their California ranch until 1942, when the young actress was killed in a tragic plane crash. Although Gable eventually married again (to women who bore striking resemblances to Lombard), he wore until his dying day a medallion made of Carole's melted ruby brooch - the only thing retrieved from the plane crash.
